Helen Price reports on plans for Imperial Road and Clarence Road including the Fountain on the Roundabout, the proposed new flats, and the removal of traffic lights.
Clarence Road Roundabout Fountain
Do you know that our Council are going to construct a water fountain at the Clarence Road roundabout? This was approved despite objections by Highways Officer as it would obstruct visibility and be a hazard to road users.
Helen Price is asking why no Councillors debated what could be done to reduce the air pollution – the air pollution is so high that this is declared an AQMA (air quality management area). Through the letters page of the local papers she is suggesting that silver birch trees should be planted instead – these have amazing properties of capturing air pollutants.
What do you think? Is a water fountain a good use of our money? Do you think it will distract motorists as they try to find their way to the Castle or Legoland? Do you think the priority should be on reducing the air pollution?
An on-line petition has been started to stop the foundation. Sign up if you feel strongly http://petitions.rbwm.gov.uk/fountain/
Imperial Road Development
Pressure from Imperial Road residents has resulted in the rejection of TWO proposals to develop a site in Imperial Road for multi dwellings. The Panel, who said that the road was in danger of losing its character, suffered already from traffic congestion and air pollution.
Imperial Road residents have masterminded a campaign including lobbying councillors, creating a Petition and getting the Press interested. It just goes to show that working as a cohesive group can get things changed for the better.
Cllr Quick said she hoped the decision would send a message to developers that residents do not want more flats and an increase in traffic and pollution.

Traffic Lights at Clarence Road / Vansittart Road Junction
The Council is threatening removal of these traffic lights much to the objection of local residents. There removal will make this junction less safe for both pedestrians and cyclists. this may be a route you use to get into town. If you object to their removal complete the on-line petition and the council consultation form. Within 3 days of the petition being uploaded it had attracted over 170 signatures. http://petitions.rbwm.gov.uk/Traffic-lights/ In addition the Council has just started a consultation exercise where you can object to their removal https://forms.rbwm.gov.uk/
